SCORING
The flexible scoring system allows each pupil’s performance on the test to be expressed in terms of age-based scores and/or class-based scores. When aged-based norms are used, pupils’ scores are compared with the results of other pupils nationally who are of a similar age. The use of class-based scores allows for a comparison with the results of other pupils nationally who at the same class level.

Separate class-based norms are available for both the beginning and the end of the school year.

Pupils' scores on the test can be expressed as Percentiles, Standard scores and STEN scores. Additionally, scores can be converted to a verbal descriptor called a Reading Level Indicator. It is also possible to calculate a reading age for each pupil. This may be useful in the case of a pupil whose age or class level falls outside the recommended range of usage for the test.

A separate CD is available from CJ Fallon which converts pupils’ scores into a range of derived scores. In addition, the CD provides the teacher with a data management system for processing and storing pupils’ test results over a period over years.

The NCCA has produced two information leaflets for parents on standardised testing. Both leaflets include explanations of the meaning of different types of standardised test scores. One of the leaflets, entitled "Your child and standardised testing", deals with Standard Scores and verbal descriptors.
