SCORING
Pupils’ test scores can be converted to Standard Scores, Percentiles, and STEN Scores by using the class-based norms which are contained in the test manuals. It is also possible to convert scores to a verbal descriptor called a Mathematics Level Indicator.

There are separate norms to cater for autumn and summer testing in the case of all test levels. Additionally, mid-year norms are provided for 1st Class and 6th Class. At Levels 4 and 5, separate norms are also provided for Part 1 and Part 2 of the test.

The test booklets at each test level are colour-coded in accordance with the five main strands in the mathematics curriculum. Each pupil’s performance can therefore be analysed under the headings of Number, Measures, Shape & Space, Algebra, and Data. The percentage of items answered correctly by each pupil can be calculated for each of the five strand areas. This analysis can be performed by using the Class Record Grids.

A separate CD is available from CJ Fallon which not only analyses pupils’ scores in terms of the strand units but which also produces a breakdown of each pupil’s score in three mathematical process areas: Understanding Concepts and Recalling Facts, Performing Computations and Procedures, and Solving Word Problems. The CD also provides the teacher with a data management system for the processing and storage of pupils’ test results over a period over years.

The NCCA has produced two information leaflets for parents on standardised testing. Both leaflets include explanations of the meaning of different types of standardised test scores.
